Beginning: Inspiration

- What is something that you are passionate about?

I am very passionate about learning different languages and exploring the many cultures that are found within Melbourne, Australia. It intrigues me because they are so different to what I have experienced in my life within the Italian culture so I would like to learn how other people in my generation are feeling/living in their own culture.

- What is the need in the community you are exploring?

Melbourne is filled with so many different people from all across the world that bring unique cultures into our country. Despite our range of diversity there is a large group of Australians that aren’t aware of cultural traditions and how to be respectful when interacting with these cultures.

- How can you show humility by addressing this need?

By taking the time to learn and study the cultures found in Melbourne, our community will be able to understand each other on a more respectful level after being educated on a certain aspect of their life that they might not have understood. By addressing this need a butterfly effect will occur which will hopefully take us along a road of being less hostile with other people no matter their cultural differences.

- Has this need been dealt with before? Was it successful or unsuccessful? Why?

The idea of spreading awareness on different cultures is not a new idea, the most common ways of educating others can be seen through cultural parades or festivals held once a year in, language learning apps or resources that give a very brief overview of the culture the language is linked to as well as mobile apps similar to my project idea. Although the current mobile apps are very similar to my idea a clear outlining difference between the two is that my project will be focused solely on helping Australian’s explore the cultures found in Melbourne. As I have been doing some digging I haven’t found an app or website that is targeted specifically at Australians and the cultures within Melbourne.

- What do you expect will be the most fun/rewarding part of this project

Deepening my knowledge on the many different communities in Melbourne that I had not known before. Hopefully I will be able to find a culture I didn't even realise was among the Melbourne community. I am also very excited to see people use my makeshift website.

- What do you expect the biggest challenges will be?

I think the biggest challenge will be finding willing participants of each of the most popular cultures in Melbourne to speak up about some of their traditions and customs that is worth knowing for an outsider to hear.

- Where do you anticipate you will need to show 'humility'?

As I am talking to people from different cultures I will need to have the quality of humility in order to help me understand their traditions and way of life. I also need to be able to use this quality when I am presenting the project so that I represent the community in a fair and just way.

- What will be your next step(s)?

At the moment I am going to find out which cultures I should showcase in my website and will begin collecting information on each of these cultures (such as traditions, language, etiquette and where they are majorly found around Melbourne.
